2014 Settlement Day Lunch

Usually we have Settlement Day Dinner. Instead, on Sunday 27th July 2014 we had a luncheon at the Maid of Auckland Hotel, 926 South Road, Edwardstown. Despite their new dining room not yet being complete, the catering was excellent, and it was pleasing to have 61 people attending, some from K.I., and some from interstate.

Sharon Howells from Western Australia gave a short presentation on the research of her ancestor Robert Frazer Russell (1807-1891) who arrived on the Duke of York on 27 July 1836, exactly 178 years ago.

David Wilson demonstrated how to access and navigate around the new KIPA website, as well as a demonstration of the research project of the first two generations of the first arrivals in the first eight ships, found at http://dukeofyork.tribalpages.com with reports at https://sites.google.com/site/kipioneers

Our guest speaker was Susan Phillis, who gave a very interesting talk about the writing of her book, “Wherever You May Go – the story of Charlotte Martha Reeves” . It would seem that Charlotte's husband Samuel Reeves was not exactly the ideal husband.

Our last speaker was Cheryl May from Parndana, Kangaroo Island who extolled the beauty of her town, and reported on the considerable work of their progress association.

Our new lapel badge (depicting a mulberry tree) was launched and was popular with many members.

Our president Gil Daw, in a closing speech, praised the Secretary (Anthea Taylor) and others from the committee for their hard work which made the occasion such a success.
