About DAW, John Wickham, b.1826
John Wickham Daw (1826 – 1911) and his wife Mary Ann Daw before moving to Kangaroo Island lived in North Adelaide & Salisbury, where he had a butchering business. In 1860, they first settled on a pastoral lease near Western Cove at the Bight of the Bay. They remained there for 3 years. Due to discouraging sheep losses, they moved to Cygnet River Valley, where they did much better, and finally moved to Cygnet River to the property known as “Sunnyside”.
NOTICE.— The PARTNERSHIP existing between JOHN WICKHAM DAW and CHARLES HAUSSEN, Jun., as Sheepfarmers, at Kangaroo Island, has this day been DISSOLVED by mutual consent. Dated this 24th day of March, 1879. JOHN W. DAW
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article42969490"Last Friday, June 28, was the sixtieth anniversary of the wedding of Mr: and Mrs. John Wickham Daw, of Cygnet River. In honour of the occasion Mr. Arthur Daw, their son, issued invitations to about 100 people to meet the venerable couple at his residence, Sunny side. A large marquee was erected, and tbe company sat down to a splendid spread. Several speeches were delivered, and the health of tbe bride and bride groom was toasted. The ages of tbe highly respected couple are 79 and 80, and they enjoy good health. Mr. J. W. Daw was chiefly instrumental in getting the Hundred of Menzies surveyed a quar ter of a century ago. He was appointed Chairman of the first district council, and has been a justice of the peace for some years. He has resided on the island tor nearly 50 years. Mr. Arthur Daw is Chairman of the present district council.

Mr. John Whickham Daw died on Tuesday last at Sunnyside, Cygnet River, Kan- garoo Island. He was 85 years old, and came to Adelaide in tbe ship Winchester in 1838, accompanied by his wife, who survives him. They settled at St. Mary's, South-road, now called Edwardstown. Mr. Daw moved to Kangaroo Island in 1840, and engaged in pastoral pursuits. When the Kingscote District Council was established the Government appointed him a councillor, and he was chosen as first chairman. Mr. Daw was the second justice of the peace appointed on Kangaroo Island about 25 years ago. He settled at the bight of the bay, and later at Cygnet Park, but subsequently removed to the Cygnet River, about five miles from Kings- cote. He was the earliest discoverer of gold on the island. For 9 years he served in the Kingscote council, and was twice chairman. On June 28, 1907, Mr. Daw celebrated his diamond wedding. He was then enjoying excellent health, but soon afterwards was stricken with paralysis, which deprived him of his power of speech, though at times he showed improvement. Just previously he was out prospecting, and brought into Kingscote splendid specimens of free gold, which he obtained in a gully of the Cygnet. Hopes were entertained that he would regain his health, and be able to show where he secured the bottle of gold from. During the last three years he had resided with his son (Mr. A. Daw).
