Hampden CARR

Died 29 Sep 1932 aged 64, at American River, K.I. (accidentally drowned). (See newspaper articles below). His wife, Emmie Bevan Carr (nee Cooper) lived on until she was 100 and both are buried at Penneshaw Cemetery. Dr Joy Seager refers to Carr as a “delightful retired doctor” He had often been a great help to her. She attended him at his home following the accident at Penneshaw to put wide strapping around his busted ribs. Before going to K.I. she says he had been a highly respected Adelaide surgeon. And before Adelaide he was highly esteemed at Port Pirie.

In 1922 Hampden Carr of Unley Road , Unley, a physician, was the owner of Lot 8, Pt Section 86C of two acres. Dr Carr was the first resident Medical Officer to the district, residing at American River. Although living there in retirement, he was registered on Kangaroo Island from 1927 until his death in 1932. Dr Joy Tearne, later Seager, who was the next resident doctor on the Island, but arrived before he died, was fond of him as a friend and admired him as a doctor. He was well-loved by the community.

OBITUARY.

The late Dr. Hampden Carr, L K , Q.C.P, (Ire), L.B.C.S. (Ire.), L.M., (Dublin), was born in County Woxford, Ireland in 1868, and was a son of the late Lieut. Col. George Carr, an officer in the Indian Army. He received his education partly on the Island of Jersey, and partly in Cork, completing his studies at the College of Surgeons, Dublin, where he took his diploma in 1890. He practiced for six months at Suffolk, England, and then came to South Australia and joined Dr. F. Monsell at Port Pirie. He also practiced at Moonta, Mount Lofty and Unley prior to coming to the Island, He was Health Officer to the Corporation of Pt. Pirie for several years. He joined the Pirie Lodge of Freemasons and also the Royal Arch Charter. He married in 1895, Miss E. B. Cooper of Adelaide. There are three sons living, Messrs C. and K. Carr of Western Australia and Flight Lieut. A. Carr of Victoria, (another son was killed in the Great War), and one daughter, Mrs Rex Cowell of Balhannah. The remains were interred in the Penneshaw Cemetery on Tuesday morning, in the presence of a large gathering of friends from all parts of the Island. The Rev. W. B. Kenworthy officiated at the grave side. Flight-Lieutenant A. Carr was present, travelling by train from Melbourne to Adelaide, and coming across by plane on Monday. Deepest sympathy is felt throughout the Island for Mrs Carr and family.
