OBITUARY

The death of Mr B. E. Lykke (father of Mesdames R. J. Cook and E. B. Pledge occurred at his residence Alberton on Saturday last, June 9th. He was born at Christiania [now Oslo], Norway, in 1842. As a member of the crew of the Admiralty Survey Ship, H.M.S. Beatrice he assisted to survey the waters around the coast of Kangaroo Island about 1868, and also the waters along the South Australian coast line. He was the last survivor of the ship's company. He also has to his credit the honour of coming to South Australia and serving on South Australia's first Naval Ship H.M.S. Ep??????, in about 1862. His memory was excellent to the close of his 92 years and his reminiscences of early South Australian history were most interesting and varied, having also served in the survey of the River Murray, as a navigable river. After retiring from the sea he became a Master Painter and decorator of (Gender's Buildings) in Adelaide. He was an Alderman of the Port Adelaide District Council for the Alberton and Queenstown Ward, for six years. Also an active member of St. George's Church Atherton, and for many years an active Freemason. He leaves a widow, 6 sons and 6 daughters, 45 grand children and 16 great grand children. Mr Lykke will be best remembered by the older residents of Kangaroo Island among whom he has made many friends, and he has visited several times during his later years and his death marks the end of another of South Australia's old pioneers.
