Obituary
THE LATE MR. W. GILES.
This morning the remains of William Giles, an old colonist, one of the Pilgrim Fathers of South Australia, will be laid in their last resting-place. Mr. Giles arrived at Kangaroo Island in October, 1837 and took charge of the South Australian Company's establishment at Kingscote. He was the following year appointed Special Magistrate by our first ruler, Governor Hindmarsh.
In January, 1841, upon the retirement of Mr. D. McLaren, Mr. Giles became Manager for the South Australian Company, and retained that onerous and influential position until January, 1851, when he retired on a well-earned pension of 6OO pounds per annum.
From his youth up, Mr. Giles was remarkable for a consistent adherence to principle and an ardent advocacy of opinions, the establishment of which he sincerely believed were essential to the well being of society. He had, while in England, been commissioned to distribute the alms of a good and very wealthy Christian, and it was in after life a great solace to Mr. Giles to know that in no case had he allowed private feeling or sectarian preference to intercept a dole to the appeal of necessity. His private charity was regulated by the same all-embracing philanthropy; it fell in the form of assistance or advice so far as his means or knowledge extended, like the dew of Heaven, equally upon all whom the great Father had been pleased to visit with affliction, or suffered to yield to temptation.
Mr. Giles was, from a very early period, a zealous assistant of the Rev. T. Q. Stow, Congregationalist minister, and he continued to assist that gentleman's successors at Freeman street Chapel as a lay preacher both in Adelaide and the country districts, until his own and other denominations became better provided than they long were with the blessings of a stated ministry.
As a citizen,'Mr. Giles was an honest, active, and useful member of the community. He was for many years one of the most punctual Justices of the Peace on the roster for magisterial duty, and he was seldom absent when there was any business of importance to be transacted by the Bench of Magistrates.
When an infusion of the representative principle was conceded to the South Australian Legislature, Mr. Giles, admitting his duties as a colonist and his obligations as a politician, offered himself as candidate for the suffrages of the electors of Port Adelaide. He came forward as a defender of the principles upon which the colony had been founded and the asserter of opinions which he considered essential to secure popular liberty and promote general prosperity. At this period the public mind was deeply agitated by the struggle for the abolition of State aid to religion, and Mr. Giles had already taken a leading part in it. The election for the Port was hotly contested, and very different interests having coalesced, Mr. Giles was defeated. He did not suffer that victory, which he characterized in a memorable sarcasm as "the triumph of beer over brains," to depress him, but avowed his intention to go to the people again on the first opportunity. That opportunity soon presented itself. Mr. Hanson (now Chief Justice), the then elected member for Yatala, accepted the office of Advocate-General, thereby causing a vacancy in the representation; and Mr. Giles immediately became a candidate for that district, and was elected. At the time that Mr. Hanson accepted the office of Advocate General there was a petition against his return pending, and when Mr. Giles was elected the fact that the petition had not beeu referred to the proper Court for decision was advanced against the validity of the second election. The Electoral Court of the day declared the election of Mr. Giles null and void; but that declaration was overruled by the Legislature, and after a season of great excitement and annoyance Mr. Giles was suffered to attend to the interests of his constituents and the colony without further molestation.
The rapid progress of the colony soon justified and demanded for the colonists a further recognition of their right to self-government, and the Imperial Parliament conferred upon them powers to frame a Constitution as liberal as any rational community could desire.
At this period Mr. Giles felt that a continued attention to legislative duties was incompatible with his declining strength, and on the 22nd of August he announced to the electors of Yatala his intention not again to become a candidate for their suffrages. The address of Mr. Giles upon that occasion contained the following characteristic passage:— "I trust that no man will be permitted to represent Yatala who is favourable to State support for religion, and who will not contend for responsible government in its full integrity of meaning, with two Houses of Legislature, universal suffrage, short Parliaments, election by ballot, and who will not promise solemnly never to sacrifice principle for expediency."
In retiring from the Legislature, Mr. Giles did not cease to be a useful and active citizen. He had been for years a member of the Central Board of Main Roads, and his extensive local knowledge greatly assisted in securing a judicious application of the funds entrusted to that body for making and maintaining great lines of communication through the settled districts of the colony. Mr. Giles was also for many years a member of the Board for the relief of destitution, and there his kindly disposition often tempered to mercy the tendencies of more rigorous disciplinarians. In fact, there was, during his long and busy public career, no religious, philanthropic, or patriotic movement which he did not actively promote or earnestly advocate.
Mr. Giles was blessed originally with a stamina that promised a long and healthy existence, and he stood the wear and tear of colonial life as well as, if not better, than most of his contemporaries. He met, however, with an accident a few years ago, when the shock, consequent upon being thrown from his vehicle, greatly injured a frame already debilitated by age and exertion. Upon recovering from the immediate consequences of that accident he continued to suffer from dyspepsia, aggravated no doubt by the decay of vital energy. A few months ago symptoms of dropsy were observed, and it was in that form of disease that death finally effected the removal of one who will ever be remembered among the founders and fathers of the colony. He died on Sunday evening about 8 o'clock. He was surrounded by a large proportion of his numerous family, and he was able to recognise and bless them up to his last moment. His was the peaceful end of the righteous man ; and although his family must mourn their loss, they have the consolation of knowing that he attained a ripe and honoured old age, and that he leaves behind him a name embalmed in the affectionate remembrance of the whole community. Mr. Giles was twice married, and, as already stated, had a very large family. Besides his afflicted widow he leaves living ten sons, six daughters, and nearly thirty grandchildren. It is pleasant to recognise many members of his wide spread family as esteemed residents amongst us ; and whilst we hope that those left behind more especially dependent on him will be above serious anxiety as to the future, we know that his liberal hearted self-abnegation did not allow of his making adequate provision for them. The funeral procession has been arranged to leave the late residence of Mr. Giles, at Beaumont, this morning, at 11 o'clock, for Clayton Chapel, Kensington.
